Astronomy Group

Now that the festivities of Christmas are over for another year we can look forward to the next 12 months. The Astronomy Group signed off the year with a look at the mysterious subject of interferometers and gravitational waves. In January we will be changing direction totally with a presentation called “What’s in a Name”.

This will give an interesting historical insight into the names of astronomical bodies and perhaps also into the minds of those who are given the responsibility of making such decisions. Then, in February we will look at the smaller bodies in space called asteroids (one of which landed on Earth and wiped out the dinosaurs around 66 million years ago). We will concentrate on the two biggest and another rather strange looking one.

We meet on the fourth Thursday of every month from 10am to 12 noon in the back room of Southwell Library.
The dates of the next few meetings are 22nd January, 26th February and 26th March.
We try to cater for beginners by not making the sessions too technical but with enough content to stimulate the more knowledgeable. After coffee the audience gets the chance to ask questions, comment or offer views, which is, I think, an important part of our sessions.

I hope to start the new year off with a full room of enthusiastic members, who like me have a passion for anything linked with space!
