Despite the wintry chill and grey skies at the start of the year, we have welcomed 2026 with fresh energy and some delightful new repertoire. At our most recent meeting we sang with real gusto, travelling back through pop history to explore a song that was placed second in the 1961 Eurovision Song Contest: Are You Sure by The Allisons. Its catchy melody and gentle harmonies were a joy to sing — thank you to Jonathan for the excellent suggestion.
We then turned to a new sea shanty, “Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her”, inspired by the Longest Johns and their remarkable community recording project during Covid. It certainly motivated our group, who gave a spirited rendition of the shanty themselves. Their YouTube video is well worth a watch.
We are always delighted to welcome new members who would like to explore the ever‐growing world of A Cappella singing. Each session begins with vocal warm‐ups and simple rounds before we move into our repertoire. We meet every third Wednesday of the month from 2:00– 4:00 pm at Southwell WI Hall and our next meeting will take place on Wednesday 18 March.
If you’re unable to join our monthly sessions, you might enjoy our A Cappella taster session on Wednesday 13 May, from 2:00 –3:30 pm, also at Southwell WI Hall. The taster session is completely free, and you’ll have the chance to try a couple of sea shanties and a classic pop song. Singing in harmony is tremendous fun, and we warmly invite you to come and experience it for yourself.
If you’re interested, please do get in touch.
