Shopping for God
I’m searching for some purpose, more meaning to my life,
I’m more than just a mother, a grandma and a wife.
I’m puzzled by what's lacking, can’t fathom what I need,
Something metaphysical? A Truth, my soul to feed?
Armed with a thirst for knowledge, a longing to fulfil,
A basket and a trolley, Let’s hope one fits the bill.
With countless Gods to choose from, I’ll try the Christian’s first,
Turning water into wine is sure to quench my thirst!
But God, within the bible, is full of sin and wrath,
Best to try another route, along my spiritual path.
Islam is controversial, and hard to understand,
Plus it would take a lifetime, to study the Quran.
The Jews live by the Torah, a stringent path to walk,
Requiring dedication, but could I give up pork?
Lord Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, gods worshipped by Hindus,
Three Idols for the price of one, is this the faith to choose?
Ganesh is Lord of wisdom, but my predicament,
Is how to praise an idol with head of elephant.
I’ll leave the myths and stories, continue on my quest,
For Inner peace and quiet, I’ll try some mindfulness.
Enlightenment through Buddha, be kind and meditate,
Rebirth again as insect, would that then be my fate?
Could I be a Jehovah, go knocking door to door?
No birthdays and no Christmas to me, would be a bore.
Agnostics, Wiccans, Mormons, Hades, Zeus, Apollo,
Confucius, Jesus, Allah, which one should I follow?
This shopping is relentless and filling me with dread,
Should give it up and be an atheist instead?
It’s time for me to check out, with empty bag in hand,
Dear God I pray, please help me, ‘cos I don’t understand.
A gentle voice then whispers, “Surrender, still your mind,
Fall into grace, I’ll hold you, just place your hand in mine.”
.
I’m here to soothe your troubles and wipe away your tears,
To teach you of forgiveness, transforming all your fears,
See me as an inner friend, that doesn’t judge or lie,
Who cares for you and loves you, in whom you can confide.
Could this be God, I wonder? He’s not in church or book,
Always present, in my mind, no further need I look.
For God is Love within me, the answer to my call,
A teacher, guide and mentor, no need to shop at all.
