The brand-new Vinyl and Vino group held its very first meeting in April, and what a debut it was! Fifteen members gathered across two houses for an evening of great music, good wine, and lively conversation about their musical memories and tastes.
What We Played
At Mike's house the group kicked off with Supertramp: Crime of the Century and Eric Clapton: 461 Ocean Boulevard. Over at Brian's, the turntable was spinning The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Genesis: Nursery Cryme.
What We Learned
The evening threw up some lovely discoveries. It reminded everyone how satisfying it is to sit and listen to an album from start to finish, rather than cherry-picking individual tracks. The group was struck by just how varied and wide-ranging members' musical interests turned out to be. There was near-unanimous agreement that Side 2 of Crime of the Century is the superior side — and, perhaps most surprisingly of all, that after nearly 60 years there is still plenty to say about Sgt. Pepper!
There are still places available for anyone who would like to join us. Come along, bring your favourite record, pour yourself a glass, and enjoy an evening of music as it was meant to be heard.
