This monthly group explores plays, but as the name suggests we want to do more than simply read them aloud.
We’ll also discuss ideas and themes, select scenes and workshop them - play with the language and experiment with characterization.
The choice of plays depends on us and will involve classic, modern, and contemporary pieces (where possible) by as wide a variety of writers as possible.
No prior knowledge of theatre is necessary, though if you have it that is good. What is necessary is a willingness to try things out, a desire to reconnect with the spoken word, an openness to shift a few boundaries, and inclination to move it and shake it, all in a very safe and supportive environment. The sessions are great fun and there is a lot of laughter.
So far we have enjoyed reading plays by Ayckbourn, Shaw, Anouilh, Stoppard, Chekhov, Congreve, Buffini, Ibsen and Shakespeare; a mixture of comedy and drama.
At the start of 2026, we are enjoying Wilde's 'The Importance of being Earnest', and are planning to read 'Dancing at Lughnasa', by Brian Friel and 'Death of a Salesman' by Arthur Miller.
